Age 18   1798 September 28.  Went on a whaling voyage on the Barbara as a harpooner.

Age 23   1803  May 12.  Death of Mother: Hitchin, Hitchin Friends’ Burial Ground. Sarah Lawrence (Abt 1749-1803).

Age 24   1804  February 7   Departed on a whaling voyage as Master of the Richard and Mary.  This voyage lasted several years.  He did not return to sea again.

Age 27   1807 August 7.  Joseph Lucas, of Lucas and Spencer, dies, a bachelor, and leaves James much of his business.
