James John Seymour Spencer Lucas

James John Seymour Spencer Lucas was the seventh child and only son of James Lucas, of Loampit HIll.   He was born in 1823 in Deptford and died in 1873 at The Priory, Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucestershire.

Early Years

He probably spent his early years in Deptford.  His mother died when he was only two, and his father when he was sixteen.  It isn’t clear what the arrangements were for raising the children after their mother died, or what happened for the next few years after their father died.

Later Years

He inherited great wealth through his father James and his great-uncle Joseph Lucas the Whaler and then he himself never married.  It seems as if he lived the life of the gentleman, and never worked although I’m sure it would be quite a job to manage the family estates.

Residences

It also isn’t clear exactly where the family lived in Lewisham, whether it was Stone House or Lucas Villa, and at what point and what the circumstances where that he and his sisters moved to The Priory, Westbury on Trym.
